Feb 10 Amberjacks saved the Day

I had the pleasure to fish with Capt Chris Kimrey and Dustin today on a beautiful winter day. Light winds and NO seas. For much of the day, fishing was a let down. Trolling for Wahoo and Blackfin Tuna was pretty poor and we were 10 miles away from a brief morning bite. Oh well. Lunch time found us 50 miles offshore on a beautiful tide line. It was a sight to see, with 73 degree water moving east at 4 knots and 69 degree water moving west at 3 knots. Where the water rubbed together whirlpools spun balls of foam the size of volkswagons like kiddy toy spinning tops. Thousands of Man-o-wars, some kind of weird worm, and small fish abounded. However, no feeding fish or birds were present. It was an epic spectacle and an epic let down. So we ran to a nearby wreck and casted and jigged as a last ditch effort. We were rewarded with an epic "Jack" day. Amberjacks, an Almaco Jack, huge Blue Runners, and an Albacore all fell to the jig. A little inshore we jigged up a Gag Grouper, lots of nice Black Sea Bass, Bank Sea Bass, and more Amberjacks. All in all, a great day. Total Catch for the Day: 14 Amberjacks up to 20 lbs, 1 Almaco Jack at 14 lbs, 1 Albacore at 8 lbs, 6 Blue Runner up to 5 lbs, 1 Gag Grouper at 7 lbs, 14 Black Sea Bass up to 3 lbs, and 2 Bank Sea Bass

Don't worry about your Capt. A little depressed but I'll be okay by the time the Cobias and Bonitos get here. Like all Robins, mine has flown off to the south searching for greener pastures, and a better quality of life. I will miss her, but I wish were nothing but the best. Maybe one day she'll be back, but my luck with girls is I worse than my luck with Fish. By far.

Captain Marty,

I've got three words you need to remember...TAG AND RELEASE...TAG AND RELEASE. Say it S-L-O-W-LY, think about it...TAG AND RELEASE.

I think you have been at sea for too many years so I can tell I'm going to have to talk to you in FISHSPEAK.

Think back to last spring when those cobes started up the coast. Bet you had a pep in your step and you couldn't wait to get out on the water.

Some came easy, some came hard but it was the HUNT that drove the adrenaline through your veins that caused you to shake each time you saw one.

BUT the real WORK started when you sank the gaff into that brown beauty and threw it into your fishbox.

Blood, crap, slime...EVERYWHERE and that cobe that had your undivided attention just moments earlier started to lose its color and became JUST another fish!

TAG AND RELEASE...

So, this spring...when that first cobe rounds the corner of the Cape...and believe me...she'll be there...throw that jig at her. Tease her, make her chase it awhile before you set the hook.

Enjoy the fight, always let her THINK she's in control and when you finally get her boatside...TAG AND RERLEASE.

You see...cobes only become a problem when you put them in the boat and THEN they are in control.

You need to TAG AND RELEASE one in Morehead City, Ocracoke, Hatteras, Rodanthe...

Well you get the picture ; ^)

Thanks for all the kind words. Meanwhile, its 348am. Another sleepless night. Id rather dream if fish than worry about birds. Follow my drift? It'll be okay.

Well, I hope you and her work it out. You seemed happy when I fished with you in July! See you next summer my friend.

Tag it, don't bag it Captain Marty. AND, just in case you're sleepy and can't read between the lines...

"Hit it"and here is the KEY part Brother Marty you don't have to "quite it" if you can learn NOT to SMOTHER it to death...

Let it swim, give it room to breathe, and you can "tag it" from now to eternity...
