Apr 23 Spinal Injection #2

Lots of people in my "outer circle" are not doing good. Lots of them are clearly doing it to themselves... Others are just getting blindsided by doctors and other "real problems". It is a very depressing world right now. I never thought I'd have to worry about anything other than a crumbling relationship with a girlfriends (and I'm going back 20 years, no one in particular) OR which way to got out of Beaufort Inlet, east, south, or west! Then, a month ago, I got a MRI result that was a life changer. In one day I went from an over grown adolescent punk to a middle aged man with a bad back.  Its all about the Back now. Steroid Injections, exercise, stretching, and physical therapy. I HAVE GOT TO GET OVER THIS!!!! I am trying to avoid surgery. I miss fishing. I miss the Ferry. I miss being happy. I feel an attitude change coming and the depression that I've been hiding is being pushed away by anger and fear... I HAVE GOT TO GET BACK TO THE WATER. I am sorry for all of you that love to follow my reports. I am very focused now on getting it back together. I've had my dose of KARMA and I'm done with REGRET also. There is an old saying, "When Life Kicks Your Ass, Make Sure It Kicks You Forward..."  Not sure where I read that, but that's my new attitude. I had a steroid injection today and my physical therapist said I was moving my toe better this morning.... Physically, it was a good day and tomorrow is going to be better...

This is pretty crappy--painful for you, and for us to watch. You might be reduced to bank fishing, though I'll tell you, it's not THAT bad.

What's all this business with your toes?

It took me about 2 1/2 years to really recover from my herniated disc....without surgery. It's definitely a slow deliberate process that can work for some but as my doc told me "You have got to change your ways". Good luck.

I appreciate the support... Unfortunately for me the "change your ways" would include lifting large fish, the beating the body recieves from running center consoles in the Ocean, and probably even casting spinning tackle..... What else is there in life? I have a difficult adjustment ahead. My biggest problem is, the pain is almost non-existent even though Doctors and Surgeons, and Physical Therapists look at my MRI and say "How are you even walking"... The problem is the numbness in my big toe that means nerve damage and that's a big problem! I'm saying, my big toe! Give me a break. Let me work. Let me fish. But Doctor's orders say "NO WAY or you'll end up paralyzed in your right leg"... It is quite a dilemma.... COBIA SEASON is upon us!

I hear ya about the "change your ways" route. I'm no charter fishernman like you and do have an easy desk job, but I loved (and still do) alot of things that a bad back doesn't go well with. I own a 24ft skiff and still load it up and fish but someone else does most of the lifting of the heavy coolers and such. I love big drum fishing and will never forget the following year while still very much watching what I did to protect my back and I went drumming alone. I hooked the biggest drum (55 X 35) that I've ever caught and when I got her along side the boat I was like "what now"??? It took all my concentration and planning to get that fish onboard and some serious planning to get ME and THE FISH in a photo but I did it and watched it swim away. My point is "where there's a will there's a way". But if you are going to be a success story you need a plan and it ain't gonna be what you've been used to doing.

100-200 days per year every year since 1990 vs How to get a fish in the boat..... Unfortunately I know the answer. It might be time to give up the Ocean and hit the Marsh... My fishing evolution went like this....

1970s---pier fishing every possible minute of every possible day

1980-1984---take a break

1985-2000---Fish offshore & king mackerel tournaments & grouper/king mackerel fishing every possible day. Pounding wide open in the Ocean

2001-2012---Fish nearshore ocean & wrecks every possible day. Still Pounding wide open and tossed on the Shoals

2012-moving fwd---- It may be time to move into the Marsh and River

So, that might be whats up for Capt Marty... Last year, I felt sorry for those Cobia anyway. It was hard to watch their struggle.

I'm joking!

Capt. Marty,

Stay strong brah. I always enjoy reading your reports. Might be time to hop on the Yoga train after you get better. I slipped a disc in my back when I was 19 and started doing yoga and a lot of abdominal work. Haven't had a problem since. Hope to see your boat out soon.

Dude, Im as tight as a guitar string

If your muscles are tight that's one of your problems....at least it was for me. My recovery (the drum fisherman) without surgery has been a direct result of doing stretching exercises pretty much every day that were recommended by my doctor and then buliding to core strenthening exercises like planks. Yoga would definitely be good but it's not my thing. I also workout with weights using machines 3 days a week.

I used to fish Morehead Ocean before I went to Carolina (1964) and then occasionally when I taught school (Smyrna, East Carteret, 68-73). I can't figure it out, but I preferred sailing to fishing. I had herniated disc 1978 treated by 2 months on my back; then the disc blew, and immediate surgery to save a rt leg that would not work. The surgery worked great; It was alcohol that kicked my ass and caused me to have to examine my life.

Everything has a purpose. Obey your docs. Quiet the hell down, and listen. You love to fish, and you'll be back, turning over a new page. Only God knows where and when.

My son (now 30, then 7) snuck out of Sanitary Restaurant once, got a piece of string and a paper clip, and caught the biggest pinfish I've ever seen on a piece of paper napkin, hanging it over the water at Tony's dock. There'll come a time.

Worse thing to have done was be on your back for 2 months, but that's what the doctors thought was right back then. You likely wouldn't have avoided surgery with today's advancements in the medical field. All that said you still came out okay.
