Sept 9 Another Citation Spanish Mackerel

Today I went and caught bait and ran out to the 3rd double set of Bouys in Beaufort Inlet. I was looking for a King Mackerel. All I got was one strike. It was a good one. It was not a King Mackerel. It was a real nice Spanish Mackerel. Biggest one of the year so far, this one weighed 7 lb 4oz. I wish I had more time. Mine is up, it's back to Hatteras tomorrow morning..... Total Catch for the Day: a 7 lb 4oz Spanish Mackerel

Capt Marty, do you just drift when you're fishing with live bait or just put the boat in gear? Are you fishing with regular live bait rigs or flurocarbon leaders?

Thanks

Anon,

Unless its really windy, I knock the boat in and out of gear....if its windy, I'll run up wind of where I want to fish and drift back over the area....

As far as the rig.... a standard 2 hook king mackerel rig tied straight to my 20# test line... The rig consists of 2-4 feet of 31# to 43# single strand wire with two #4 treble hooks.

I'm planning to switch to a high vis line on my livebait rods. When I do that, I will blood knot in 10 feet of flourocarbon to the high vis mono...

That's all I got. These rigs have handled Bluefin Tuna up to 240 lbs, Wahoo up to 98 lbs, and (more importantly) Tournament Winning) King Mackerels.... Better test? These rigs hold up to Amberjacks! The line always breaks first!
