A Little Fishing Philosophy

One of the Great Thrills of Fishing is that we are both Surprised by the Strike and we Expected it all along......

By the late Donald Millus from Conway, SC from his literary classic:

"FISHING THE SOUTHEAST COAST"

The Best Fishing Book
I ever read....... And I read it probably 25 times..... Cover to Cover......

Fans of my Blog recognize this saying. I think its worth repeating on the day after I caught a Citation Flounder in a crazy spot and with my Trout Rod..... (I was surprized)  I had the foresight to carry my Landing Net with me though and I wouldn't have landed this Flounder without it..... (I expected it all along)  And it was a (Great Thrill). My Ferry Crew watched this unfold and I'd say they were actually impressed. As should be, Flounder and/or Speckled Trout are always Big Attention Getters. My Oiler and Assistant, Mr. Peco de Gallo, will be having fresh Flounder tonight courtesy of me.

Also, Thank You to Mr. Donald Millus. Sir, you helped me catch this Flounder!

Nice quote captain marty. I will be down in Beaufort this weekend. Got any tips on night fishing? We will access to a dock on Taylor's creek.

My favorite outdoor read has got to be "The Old Man and the Boy" I will need to check out the one you commented on.

cheers

Jordan,

I just lost access to a Dock that I fished from for 40 years.... It hurts. The property was sold. I CAN NOT begin to explain the fish caught off that Dock. Not without sounding like a liar.... A 10 lb 6 oz Flounder on 10/11/03. Six Flounders over Six Pounds on Six Drops on Halloween Day of 2006. ONE HUNDRED Red Drum between Marc Rouse and I on Election Day 2004. More recently, last September a 35" Cobia on a gulp way inside the pilings that I managed to land.... Honestly, last night I caught my 53rd Flounder Citation. Probably 20 of them came from that Dock in Taylors Creek.

As far as you guys go.... If the Finger Mullet are running in the Creek, I'd give Taylors Creek some effort around high tide. Especially at night. Remember, at night, all you got to fish is "the circle of light". Fished strategically you will catch them all. I caught 38 Flounders one night at Oden's Dock up at Hatteras. It was 2-4am and I systematically covered every lighted area and Dayum! I got them all.

Other than that, if its pretty, 2-4 lb Blues on the Shoals, Kings on the Eastside, Red Drum on the Shack Beach at low tide, Small Sp Trout everywhere, Amberjacks chewing at the 60-90 ft wrecks, and Spots have showed up too....

Mirrorlures to the east of those Stop Nets at Zero Dark Thirty could be nothing, could be the best and biggest Sp Trout you've ever seen. Those guys have already sacked up a bunch 0f 10-13 pounders over there. Shhhhhhhh. Its a SECRET!!!

Again, night fishing (off the Dock) a fat 4-5" finger mullet, heavy braid (heavy structure) fish the lights. Last night at Hatteras, my first drop with a white Gulp in a well lit 2 foot deep sandy area and I had 4 Flounder fighting over my bait.... They just needed to be patient. I can only catch them one at a time. And I did... But yeah man, Oct-Nov Taylors Creek can be a great Fishing Destination

Good Luck Jordan

Just thinking... Off the same Dock in Sept of 1987, Randy Pickwell and I caught 355 large Croakers one day/night. Oh smell the ganja was in the air. We ground up a trash can full of them and went to the 13 Bouy the next day. I was introduced to Mr Amberjack that day. Lost every bait in my tacklebox. Didnt get my first Amberjack until 9 months later! That day I did catch my first King Mackerel though. Jigging with a Gotcha Plug because that was all we had left.... The trashcan full of ground, chopped, and beat Croakers working like magic that day... I wonder why we never did it again?????

Fond memories... My fishing can be broken into 2 parts.... Pre 1988. And 1988 and beyond. Things happened to me in 1988 that changed my life. A 66 lb Amberjack on a #00 Clarkspoon while trolling for Spanish. A 30 lb King Mackerel while dragging a bare seawitch on a 6 foot wire leader attached to a 8oz trolling wt while running 25 knots approximately 5 miles south of the Sea Bouy. And finally, a 50 lb Yellowfin Tuna caught on a small spinning rod and a stingsilver while chasing 4-6 lb Albacore out near the 13 Bouy...Those 3 events changed my life forever....

I felt like I was invincible after the Yellowfin. I felt then and still do today, that if I can get a hook in a fish, that I can catch anything on any size tackle... The trick, of course is getting the bite and the hook-up. Ive fought giant Wahoo and Bluefin Tuna for 2+ hours on really really light tackle and won those battles... I hooked, caught, and landed a 365 lb Bluefin Tuna (on 80#)and released a 350 lb Blue Marlin (on 30#) right by myself! Ive also lost a few big fish through the years due to impatience, but I think Im pretty sound with the rod in my hand.... Getting a bite? Sometimes I'm not so good....
