June 2- Downward Cobia Trend Continues

Every day it gets a little worse..... Well, today was Rock Bottom. Top Water Charters layed a TURD today and I really really really tried my best..... (As always)    Andy and his Dad were seasoned veterans from the New England Codfish Grounds. They knew a little about good fishing. They also knew how things can go wrong despite the best efforts . Today we had perfect Bait, a perfect Tide, and perfect Weather . The only thing that failed us were the Cobia..... Honestly, after 3 days of fishing this week, I've had enough. I will gladly stow my gear and put up my boat. I'm ready to go back to the damn Ferry. ..... (Never thought I'd actually say that)..... What we need around here is a weather change to bring in the next wave of fish. Until that actually happens you'll have one or two guys here crowing about "the Cobia" they caught, as the rest of the Fleet sucks hind tit. Meanwhile, don't let your late night Internet wanderlust carry you north to Oregon Inlet .... Cause your happy bubble will burst at the sight of docks covered with Cobia.... Yes indeed, it's nice to be where the fish are..... We had our shot when they swam by here. That first wave is always the BIG FAT DUMB FISH.  60-90 pounders that eat bucktails like Buddy Perry eats Lemon Balls. Oh well, today we caught small Sharks and big Rays. We also broke off our 3 largest Rays. Those I suspect were huge Southern Stingrays. Once they establish a vacuum sticking themselves to the sandy bottom..... It's over. They definitely exploited our "weak link" as they kept hammering a Capt Tugwell combo that needs some work. I'm sorry about that, but it only cost us a potential glimpse of TV star Steve Irwin's murderer....... Anyway, as we gave up a big old Leatherback Turtle popped up and he had a few riders. I made a cast and hooked up. Keeping the STREAK ALIVE! Unfortunately, this Junior Cobia Cub was a 25" model. Andy decked him and released him. We tried to entice the others but all we managed to do was hook the Turtle... Oooops.... It was exciting to watch a 1200 lb Leatherback to barrel rolls and porpoise halfway out of the water. We chased and tugged and pulled for 10 minutes until we ended it and went looking elsewhere. Found Nothing. Bad day with a bad ending..... Total Catch for the Day:  1 Cobia at 25",  1 Sandbar Shark at 12 lbs, 4 Atlantic Sharpnose Sharks from 6-10 lbs, 1 Southern Eagle Ray at 45 lbs, and 2 Spiny Butterfly Rays up to 50 lbs
