Cobia Season Final Score- 35 Cobias

It really reads like a GOOD DAY of Fishing for Capt Aaron Kelly on the Rock Solid out of Oregon Inlet.... Aaron is the #1 Cobia Captain in the USA. He catches between 100-200 Cobia per year. I remember either last year or the year before, he had an 80(?) fish day.... He would laugh at my "CITATION COUNT".... Like I said, my Season Total reads like a good day for him.... But, Fishing is a little different here in the Central part of the NC Coast..... Plus, I did my best, and don't forget, I have to work HALF THE TIME...... Anyway, this year I caught 35 Cobia. Down from last year's TOTAL of 50 Cobia. I did have a good, if not great year for Heavyweight Cobia. Thanks especially to Capt Tuggwell's keen vision I landed Cobias weighing 85, 82, 75, 73, 71, 55, and 45 lbs this season.... I would guess that we'd encounter a few random Cobias on the Wrecks or King Mackerel Fishing later this season, but as far as "Cobia Fishing" goes....... It's over this year. Thanks to everyone that went Cobia Fishing with me this year and I apologize to those that did not succeed.

Cap'n, no need to be down about your count, 99% of us would be glad to have one of your good days counts as our season count. You catch 'em out of Beaufort inlet as good as anyone around.

Thanks man. I know that I do okay. There are a small group of other local guys that do very good. I admire and look up to them.... They are not as well rounded as I. (They're pretty healthy) Ha Ha, I'm kidding. What I mean is that those boys are specialists.... The pretty much fish for Cobia and that's it. On the other hand, I love variety. I always try to have my hands in everything and a try to catch all sorts of fish. Hard for me to concentrate on Cobia when the Bonito are running or the Mahi are showing up...Anyway, I like to compare myself to some of the guys up around Hatteras and Oregon Inlet. Those are the Fishing Guides that impress me and that I admire... Aaron Kelly is the "King of Cobia" and hands down, in my opinion, THE BEST INSHORE, LIGHT TACKLE FISHING GUIDE IN NC.... Period...

To everyone else, like those boys that were doing all that Bragging on my "MID SEASON COBIA REPORT", all I can say to them, while not putting down and disrespecting my clients.... It's a HELLUVA LOT OF DIFFERENCE when you and your friends (regular crew) go fishing for Cobia (or anything else for that matter)versus going Fishing with paying clients that MAY or MAY NOT be even average Fishermen. Cobia are big strong fish. They are a fish that can cause a MILLION THINGS to go wrong and any of them can cost you a Fish. A big Fish. A trophy fish... Lose a few and it can ruin a day.... A few ruined days can wreck a week.... I work week on/week off, so a bad week lingers for another 7 days..... So these boys bragging about 30 Cobia in 5 trips with 6 over 50 lbs, whatever, congrats to them for sure, BUT.... Let's see them same boys do that with 2 little ole ladies from Toledo Ohio, or 2 hung over Lacrosse Players from Harvard Law School, or an precious Autistic 7 year old from Arkansas...... and lets see them do it safely and lets see them do it safely for 14 years! Check them boys numbers then! So, in reality, its a whole lot easier being a good fisherman than it is to be a good fishing guide. You need to be good to even consider entering the "Guiding Game". Unfortunately, our little industry has been overrun with mediocre start-ups that caught a couple big fish last year and they think they're "the next big thing"..... We'll see about that and I feel sorry for their customers that will learn the hard way and pay ultimately, through their wallets...

To sum it up. take bragging with a grain of salt.... This is MY BLOG so of course my perceived "bragging" is just me trying to sell a fishing trip! This season, I am bragging about 35 Cobia! That sounds pretty good, huh? I reality, Tuggwell and I caught 13 of those in one morning between 7am and 11 am. Other than that, it was pretty mediocre... By the same token, if Tuggwell and I would've spent 14 staright days together, just he and I, I bet we could've caught 100 Cobia. As a FISHING GUIDE, putting fish in the BOX gets all the attention. But going out and returning home safely is the #1 priority. Having fun, catching fish, being an ambassador for the environment and area are my other concerns.... Sorry for the Rant. Thanks for the compliment.
